Santa is a Fin. It is true, dear children. He lives in Lapland and 6km far from Rovaniemi there is a village built in his honour.

Empty Square

We (me, little Juraj and my dear friend Marianne) had visited this place out of season (second half of September to be specific), hence we had avoided crowdes of tourists and children keen on meeting their beloved Christmas character. It was a calm, relaxed afternoon, without any stress and noice... However, it would be more interesting for Juraj, if there were some other children to play with at the local playground.

The place itself is not very big. Reminds somewhat more modest "Disneyland". Less theatrical, less pretentious.

Absence of crowds and rainy weather gives this place grey and little gloomy atmosphere, which suits me. So while Juraj was quietly asleep in the pram, we were strolling through the empty little square that was filled only by a sound of Finnish Christmas Carolls and Finnish Tango.

Santa's Post Office

We have interrupted Santa in his office sitting on his legendary "sit-on-my-knee" bench and reading newspaper, as there were no children at the moment. We had a nice little chat (in Finnish! I am so proud of myself!) and his "litte Elf" took a picture of us three together (I paid 20euro for it and now it decorates our wall). I have to say that is very nice and pleasant man. I have to confess that the magic got to me and I felt excited....definitely more than little Juraj, who however did not cry at all! Even when he saw that long, wavy, white beard of Santa. He is a brave child!

Souvenir Santa

Of course we went through all the souvenir shops and concluded, that there are some extraordinary pieces (i.e. canned bear meet or a collection of winter clothes and accesories inspired by Sami culture; Yes, I should have bought those amazing mittens!) but also very ordinary stuff you would buy anywhere in Helsinki.

We also visited Santa's local post office. I have sent postcard to my parents and to our friend Vlady living in Helsinki, and I had very nice small chat with the ladies (Elfs, Santa's helpers) working in the office. They were nice and friendly and even posed for couple of pictures. I liked the place a lot. Very cosy. And you can have your mail delivered either right away or at the Christmas time. Isn't that fun?!

Kahvi ja Munkki

After some time of strolling around, we sat down at the closest cafeteria, which was offering a "coffee+donut" menu for a very reasonable price.We had not tasted any local food, so I cannot judge that, but talking about the coffee, it was typical finnish. You can drink it...in the end.

After that we of course made THE pictures with the Arctic circle.You don't have them, it is almost as you have not been there. My sincere thanks goes to my dear friend Marianne, who made exclusive pictures of "escape behind an arctic circle" pictures. See below.

And there was Santa everywhere! Smaller or bigger, chubbier or thinner, from a plush or lego, on the pictures, on the TV, inside ir outside...

We have not seen his deers though. Maybe if Juraj was a bit bigger, we would have paid the ticket for animals crammed behind a fence.

Me and THE Arctic Circle!!!

PS: Did you know that unlike in the U.S., you cannot sleep while Santa comes to bring you presents. You have to wait for him and sing for him some Christmas Caroll in order to get some presents (Which is quite similiar to Russian "Дедушка Мороз"-i.e. Grandpa Frost"). It is true! I got it right from HIM! :-)

P.PS: Santa is called in Finland JOULUPUKKI (Joulu = Christmas; pukki = a billy-goat)

ČESKY:

My jsme se tam s Juráškem (a kamarádkou Marianne) podívali mimo sezónu (v druhé půlce září) a měli jsme tak možnost všechno si prohlédnout a užít bez velkého množství návštěvníků. Bez stresu, bez hluku... No, je pravda, že kdyby tam bylo více dětí na místním hřišti, pro Juráše by to bylo zajímavější.

Místo samo o sobě není moc velké. Takový skromnější "Disneyland", méně okázalý a ne tak tetrální.

Nedostatek lidí a upršené počasí tomu dodávalo trochu pošmournou, ale pro mne zajímavou atmosféru. Juraj si pěkně chrupkal v kočárku a my jsme mezitím procházeli prázdným náměstím, jež oživovala jen trocha finského tanga a vánočních koled, které se linuly z ampliónů.

Even YOU can be Santa! :-)

Vyrušili jsme v kanceláři Santu, který seděl připraven na své legendární "sedni-si-mi-na-koleno" lavici a četl noviny, protože zrovna nikde nebyly žádné děti. Popovídali jsme si s ním (válela jsem ve Finštině!!) a vyfotili se (za fotku, která nám teď visí na zdi, jsem utratila 20euro). Je to vlastně moc milý a vtipný pán, ten Santa! Byla jsem z toho všeho fakt okouzlená. Asi víc než roční Juraj, který moc nevěděl, která bije. Ale neplakal, ani když uviděl ty jeho bílé, kudrnaté a po pás dlouhé vousy! Je to kluk statečná.

Souvenir Shop

Obešli jsme obchody se suvenýry, které nabízely pár zajímavých kousků a spoustu věcí, které člověk sežene i v Helsinkách (tak třeba konzervované medvědí maso mi přišlo dost kuriozní; a zimní oblečení ve stylu Sami zase velmi lákavé. Ach! Ty rukavice jsem si měla koupit!)

Navštívili jsme místní Santovu poštu a poslali pohled mým rodičům a kamarádovi Vladymu do Helsinek. Popovídali si trochu s moc milými dámamy-Elfkami, které mi dokonce ochotně zapózovaly pro několik snímků.
Pošta se mi vůbec zamlouvala. Útulné místo. A návštěvníci mají možnost poslat pohlednici hned nebo až na Vánoce. Super nápad!

Když jsme to všechno prošli, sedli jsme si do kavárny, ve které nám nabídli menu "kafe+koblížek" za velmi přijatelnou cenu. Místní jídlo jsme nezkoušeli. Nemůžu hodnotit. No, kafe bylo klasické finské... S trochou přemáhání se dalo vypít.

"Shall we deliver it now or on the Christmas Eve?"

Pak samozřejmě přišla řada na fotky s polárním kruhem! Bez nich jako byste tam vůbec nebyli. Moc děkuju kamarádce Marianne za umělecké stvárnění mého "úprku za polární kruh". K vidění níže! :-)

"Don't sit on Lego Santa!"

A všude byl Santa...menší, větší, tlustší, tenčí...na fotkách, v televizi, z lega, z plyše, živý, svítící,...

Jeho soby jsme neviděli, i když jsme mohly. Možná, kdyby byl Jurášek starší a něco by z toho měl, vstupné na zvířata v ohradě bychom možná zaplatily.

AT the or ON the Arctic Circle?

PS: Věděli jste, že ve Finsku (oproti Spojeným státům americkým) musíte na Santu s dárky počkat a nesmíte jít spát? A taky mu musíte zazpívat písničku, než nějaký ten dárek dostanete (podobně jako u ruského Дедушка Мороз - tedy dědy Mráze). A to je pravda. Řekl mi to přímo ON! :-)


P.PS: Ve Finsku se Santa jmenuje JOULUPUKKI (Joulu = Vánoce; pukki = kozel). Kouzelné, že?
